An emergency evacuation chair is designed to assist those with limited mobility, including wheelchair users, to safely exit a building during an emergency. For example, they may be used in the event of a fire, natural disaster or if the lift breaks down unexpectedly. They are often purchased by companies for offices buildings, shopping centres, schools, hotels, healthcare facilities, care homes, hospitals and more.

How easy are evacuation chairs to use?

Evacuation chairs are designed to be quick and easy to deploy in the event of an emergency and are designed to be operated by just one person. All of our evacuation chairs are provided with a wall-mounted bracket and cover to ensure they can be safely stored by the stairs and easily accessible in the event of an emergency. The chairs are also provided with instructions to ensure you can train your staff to use the chairs ready for any emergency.

Are emergency evacuation chairs safe?

Yes, stairway emergency evacuation chairs have been tried and tested to ensure they are safe to use. They are highly durable with capacities of circa 180kg and are CE marked.

Can emergency evacuation chairs be used as a normal wheelchairs?

We would not recommend this as the evacuation chairs are designed for specifically for emergency situations rather than standard access. Evacuation chairs are designed to be used on staircases whilst wheelchairs are designed for flat ground.

Are evacuation chairs easy to store?

Yes, our evacuation chairs are provdied with a wall-mounted storage bracket to allow them to be safely stored by the staircase, ensuring they are accessible in an emergency. They are also provided with a highly visible storage bag.

Can evacuation chairs be used on all staircases?

All of our evacuation chairs state the recommended stair angle the chair can be used at, we would not recommend exceeding the recommended angle of 28 - 42°.

How comfortable are evacuation chairs?

Evacuation chairs have been designed for emergency use and practically as the main focus so the comfort level can vary. We do offer various evacuation chairs with additional comfort features. The Versa Plus Evacuation Chair offers large footrests whilst the Versa Elite Evacuation Chair offers a four-point harness, footrests and armrests.

What is the difference between an evacuation chair and a wheelchair?

Evacuation chairs are specifically designed for safely evacuating those with limited mobility in the event of an emergency. They are compact and lightweight for easy storage and are often narrower than wheelchairs to ensure they can be moved down stairways or through narrow passages. They are designed to be used on staircases at a steeper angle then general wheelchairs would be used at. Wheelchairs are designed more for day-to-day use to allow users to move around either independently or with assistance. Wheelchairs normally have larger wheels than evacuation chairs and are designed to mainly be used on flat surfaces.

Where should the evacuation chair be placed in a building?

It is recommended the evacuation chair is placed in an easily accessible and visible location in a building, for example at the top or bottom of the staircase. It is also important to ensure staff are aware of the evacuation chair and its location.

How many people are needed to operate an evacuation chair?

Generally, an evacuation chair can be operated by one person.

Do buildings legally require evacuation chairs?

If you are an employer, the owner, the landlord or an occupier of a nondomestic premises or business are responsible for fire safety and are required to undertake fire risk assessments of the premises and put into place appropriate fire safety measures. During a risk assssment you will need to consider emergency routes and exits aloong with the needs of vulnerable people. In some instances, especially if you have staircases and lifts in the building, it is likely you will need an evacuation chair to ensure the safe evacuation of those with disabilities.

Can the evacuation chairs be purchased VAT exempt?

As mobility aids individuals with disabilities and registered UK charities can purchase the chairs VAT exempt, simply complete your details in the VAT exemption box at the checkout.

We want you to receive your goods on a timely basis and in pristine condition. Please help us accomplish this by checking the delivery address carefully as noted on the invoice and notifying us immediately if there is an error. Upon delivery, please do not sign for the goods unless you are happy with the condition of the product.

Order information

If you are ordering on behalf of a company, please provide your VAT IE and EORI number to us as soon as possible to prevent delays in dispatching your order, the couriers require us to provide this prior to the dispatch of goods. If items are being sent on a pallet, we will also require you to complete a POA prior to dispatch.

If you have purchased a loading ramp, prior to use please make sure to check the maximum load height as stated on the invoice, read the safety instructions on the side of the ramp closely, and follow the instructions supplied with the product. Failure to comply with product instructions will invalidate your warranty and could cause an accident, injury or death so please take this seriously.

Our shipping terms for all customers are INCO Terms DAP unless explicitly specified.

We understand that in some instances, customers will need to return an item due to a change in circumstances, incorrect sizing or simply changing their mind. Here at The Ramp People we offer a 60 day money back guarantee on all purchases; however, there will be circumstances where a return is not possible. So as to remain transparent with our customers, we have detailed our returns policy below to answer any queries you may have about the process.

Here are the most common circumstances for returns and how we can help;

Change of mind, wrong size or unsuitable item

Sometimes an item is not what you imagined, it doesn’t fit or you just don’t need it any more. In these circumstances, we are happy to offer an exchange or a full refund, no quibble of course, if the item is returned in its original condition, including original packaging, and within 60 days from date of receipt. Please note, items which are advertised as 'built to order', or customised items are non-returnable and non-refundable.

Please take care when returning an order to us as all customers are in charge of the item’s return and covering the cost. We recommend you use a tracked, insured returns method so as to ensure a secure transit.

For an exchanged item, please make a note on the returns form that you wish to exchange the product or call us on +353 1 695 0520. We can deliver new items within our standard delivery policy. Unwanted items should be sent back to our address marked 'Returns Department'.

Item incorrect or damaged on arrival

Upon delivery, please do not sign for the goods unless you are happy with the condition of the product.

We pride ourselves on our excellent customer care and service delivery, however, if an unfortunate incident occurs where you believe you have been sent the wrong item please call us immediately on #353 1 695 0520.

For damaged items, please supply proof of damage with a photo and email it across to our customer support team at hello@theramppeople.co.uk. For any incorrect deliveries, we will always check the part numbers on your order due to using different names for marketing and warehouse storage – we can then arrange for the correct item to be delivered whilst the unwanted item is collected and brought back to us.

A refund or replacement can only be processed once we have received all unwanted items and confirmed any damage.

Faulty items

In the unlikely event of an item becoming faulty, please view our guarantee policies in our terms and conditions.

If your item is within our warranty, we will be able to collect it to either repair or replace, however this can only be done once we have confirmed the fault. If you urgently need the item returned, we advise placing a new order and await the refund for the faulty item.

Items that cannot be cancelled or returned

Under Consumer Contract Regulations, customers have the right to cancel any order for any item bought through The Ramp People on this website including a full refund. Unfortunately, these regulations do not apply to the following circumstances;

Items that are collected from our premises.
Items with a product description stating: "Built to order or customised."
Products that are personalised or made to a customer specification.
Sealed goods that come with health protection or hygiene regulations that have been un-sealed after delivery.
Returning any products that present a hygiene risk after being used by the recipient.

What happens next?

Customers are responsible for any returned goods until they reach our warehouse as stated in this returns policy. None of these terms or conditions affect your statutory legal rights.

Once the item is returned back to our warehouse, please allow 1-2 working days for the items to be checked. Once the items have been checked and the condition is as agreed, a credit note will be emailed across to you. Please note, once the credit note has been provided refunds take up to 7 days.
