Self‑propelled wheelchairs have large rear wheels fitted with push rims, allowing the user to move and control the wheelchair themselves. They usually also include rear handles and brakes so that a caregiver can assist when needed.
I wish to purchase a wheelchair, what should I consider when choosing a chair?
When choosing a wheelchair, consider how often you’ll use it and whether it’s primarily for indoor or outdoor use; for frequent or long‑distance use, an electric wheelchair may be more suitable. It’s important to check key measurements in your home, such as door widths and available storage space, to ensure the chair will fit comfortably. You should also measure your hip width to determine the correct seat width, and make sure the seat depth and back height provide proper support. Think about any additional features you may need, such as adjustable leg rests or armrests, and check the overall weight of the chair, particularly if you plan to lift and store it in a car boot.
How do I determine the correct wheelchair seat width?
To find the right seat width, sit upright on a firm, flat surface with your hips in a natural position. Measure the distance across the widest part of your hips or thighs. Then add about 2cm to allow room for clothing and comfortable movement. This ensures the seat is supportive without feeling tight or restrictive.
