INSTALLATION GUIDE

Before installing your speed bumps, make sure that the road surface that you will be fitting them onto is clean, dry, and undamaged. Any damage to the surface should be repaired before the speed ramps are installed to provide a reasonably flat and consistent surface.

Lay out your speed bumps in the area you want to install them to make sure that they fit comfortably in your available space and that they lie flat on the surface ensuring they are tight and well aligned. Mark out on the substrate surface where the road humps are to be drilled and fitted. Then either drill the holes in the substrate through the bumps’ pre-made fixing holes, or remove the ramps after marking the position of the drill holes, and drill the holes independently of the speed bumps. The holes should be 120mm-1400mm to accommodate the fixings. We strongly suggest you drill a couple of test holes first to ensure the drill bit is of the correct size for the material you are drilling into. Finally, ensuring the holes are free from dust and debris, insert the fixings into the hole, and secure your speed bumps in place. We recommend that hand tools are used to prevent damage to fixings, however, power tools can be used with caution while ensuring bolts are not overtightened and damaged, but this is at the customer's own risk.

IMPORTANT - Positioning of your speed bumps:

  • To maximise the life of your speed bumps, vehicles should drive over the product in a straight line. Vehicles turning on the speed bump may damage the speed bump and fixings and will likely cause excessive discomfort to the driver and passengers.
  • Speed bumps should be set back from junctions to reduce the chance of vehicles stalling when pulling away. For more information on speed hump regulations visit gov.uk.

All our speed bumps and speed cushions are supplied with universal fixings suitable for tarmac and/or concrete, as per image below:

At The Ramp People we also stock a range of wall and pole mounted speed bump warning signs featuring a high contrast reflective surface for installation in car parks, private roads and areas where traffic calming has been installed.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

The security of the fixings / adhesive should be checked on a regular basis. Circumstances will vary, based upon the volume of foot traffic etc., but as a guide, monthly inspections would be advisable.

Pallet Truck Ramp Buying Guide

Pallet Trucks are regularly used in the warehouse, businesses, shops and commercial sites to safely transport goods. Due to their low clearance, and to ensure safe loading, ramps are generally required to allow pallet trucks to safely overcome kerbs, steps and access ground level shipping containers.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know before buying a pallet truck ramp. We will look at what to consider prior to purchasing the ramp, types of ramps available, safety features and more.

What To Check

1. Vertical height

Measure the vertical height from the ground to where the end of the ramp will rest.

2. Width of the area

Check the total width of the pallet truck and the width of the area you are overcoming, for example the step.

3. Capacity required

Check the weight of the pallet truck and any weight it will be carrying

Pallet trucks generally have low clearance. Most manual pallet trucks can climb a gradient up to 12%. The gradient an electric pallet truck can climb varies depending on your model so we suggest checking your user manual prior to purchase. If you are unsure of the ramps suitability please contact our team. We can carry out a CAD simulation to check if the chosen ramp is suitable for your needs.

If you are looking to load a pallet truck into a van, it is important to select the correct ramp length for safe loading. Most van ramps are designed for use at a 30% gradient so, in many instances, due to pallet trucks low clearance the ramps need to be custom cut to provide a smoother gradient. Please contact our team for further advice.

Things to consider

Preferred material

Aluminium solutions are often more lightweight whilst rubber options are generally heavier but more durable when left outside.

Required gradient

Pallet trucks have low clearance so a smooth gradient is normally required, check the product manual for the maximum gradient it can climb.

Will the ramp be used in various locations?

Wedge ramps are designed for specific heights so, if using the ramp in various areas a ramp which rests onto the step may be more suitable.

Will you be loading other items?

For use in a warehouse and commercial sites, you may wish to ensure the ramp is also suitable for loading cages and forklifts.

Weight of the ramp

For ease of manual handling, check the ramp weight is suitable. For aluminium solutions, handles can be added where required.

Certifications

Check the ramp is certified to your required standards. The aluminium ramps are TÜV certified and often offer certified anti-slip ratings.

Care & Maintenance

  • Minimal maintenance is required, they can simply be wiped clean with a damp cloth when needed. Ensure ramps remain free from debris, dirt, and grease to prevent slip hazards and maintain optimum traction.
  • Check your loading ramp frequently for signs of wear or damage. If any issues are found, contact the manufacturer for guidance. Do not continue to use the ramp if it is damaged.
  • When ramps are used in a professional setting setting, they should be inspected regularly in accordance with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

Assembling, Positioning & Use

  • All of the ramps are designed as portable, temporary solutions and are easy to use. The portable pallet truck ramps offer a curved rest on connection with a pre-drilled hole to allow the ramps to be secured to the step or container during use. The aluminium wedge ramps can simply be placed in front of the step, kerb or container. The loading bridge simply rests in place on the loading bay and vehicle. The modular rubber ramps do require assembly, the ramps can be connected together using the modular bone connectors. Connect the required number of pieces to cover your required width.
  • When using any loading ramp, it is essential to follow the guidance provided on our website and in the user manual supplied with the product. Never exceed the recommended capacity or load height, as doing so can damage the ramp and compromise safety. If you have any concerns about suitability, please contact our team for expert advice.
  • In workplace settings, a health and safety assessment should be carried out if employees are required to lift ramps. Companies must comply with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER). Appropriate PPE, including safety boots and gloves, should always be worn when handling ramps.

Custom Solutions

  • At The Ramp People we offer customised pallet truck ramps to meet your specific requirements. For loading pallet trucks with specifically low clearance we can undertake a CAD simulation to identify and create a solution suitable for your loading needs. Further customisations include adding carry handles to the ramps to make it easier to lift and move, adding or removing safety edges, modifying the width and length and cutting the angle of the foot of the ramp to achieve a smoother gradient.
